cali here we come.

While its 12 degrees with a -2 degree windchill here in my mitten state, I am highly anticipating a trip to Southern California tomorrow with Brad and my in-laws to visit our brother & sister-in-law and nephew, Carter. Thank goodness for beaches and 70 degree weather!

My adorable nephew just turned one, and we plan to celebrate his birthday during our stay. We are also planning a trip to the San Diego zoo, and we’ll get a chance to see old friends who have also moved out west. I’ll be sure to share some pictures from our So Cal adventures this weekend. Have a good weekend!

much-needed motivation.

Even though I have a goal for my third 5k race coming up in May (Race for the Cure, downtown Detroit), it is still difficult to find the will to visit the gym after work. Why is this? First of all by the time I get to the gym, it's dark and cold outside and my mind is telling my body to relax for the evening. Second, the couch is just way too comfy.

With the onset of New Year's and the resolutions that come with it, a lot of the employees I speak to at work are also bogged down with finding fitness motivation. So I thought I'd share some motivation tips for getting our butts off the couch.

1. Set simple and realistic goals. Lose 20 pounds in a month? Not realistic and bound to make you feel like a failure. Make sure your goals are specific, too. Instead of your goal being to work out more, have your goal be to work 4 days a week instead of 3.

2. Start slowly and be patient. You may become frustrated and give up if you push yourself too hard. For example, I'm planning on increasing my mile time by 20 seconds every 2 weeks, giving my body plenty of time to adjust and become comfortable with the increased speed.

3. Vary your activities. Walking alone will get super boring after a while. Try walking one day, yoga the next, and lifting weights a third. This will keep your workouts mixed up and interesting.

4. Have fun! My friend Salina reminded me of this when I complained to her I was seriously slacking off at the gym. It's supposed to be fun, so make sure to do an activity you enjoy!

5. Reward yourself. Met that realistic and short-term goal? Buy yourself a magazine or a new shade of nail polish. Remember how it feels to accomplish that goal, and keep on keeping on.

6. Most important in my eyes, be flexible! Don't beat yourself up if you're simply too tired or don't feel like exercising. Just be sure to get back on track when you get over your slump.

oh, so sweet.

My latest health adventure? Trying to cut out sweetener in my daily morning coffee. I’ve always been a 2-sugar packet kind of gal, but after learning scary details behind chemically created sweeteners, bleached sugars, and added calories, I decided to give it a try. I know there are much better alternatives, such as Raw Sugar and natural sweeteners like xylitol and stevia, but I love to see how far I can push myself. So, this morning, instead of my normal 2 Splendas and skim milk, I’ve knocked it down to 1. We’ll see how long I last before my sweet tooth starts begging for the little white granules.

Looking for a healthier alternative to your daily sweetener? Try these, mainly found at Whole Foods and natural food stores:

Emerald Forest
SweetLeaf
Truvia
Whey Low

6/3/09 Update: After himming and hawing over which sweetener to choose, I decided to choose the one closest to mother nature with the least amount of processing, regardless of caloric amounts. So, organic raw sugar is the way to go for now... unless something better comes along or someone has a better suggestion!

here she is.

I had the pleasure of ringing in the new year with the Barenaked Ladies at the Detroit Fox Theater with my husband and 5,000 strangers. In the words of the Barenaked Laides, "2008, get the F*$#! outta here!" Yep, that pretty much sums up my feelings exactly.

With some inspiration from my friends' blogs and with a new year on the horizon, how about a brand new blog? All shiny and pretty. I know I'm 12 days late, but here she is: peace love veggies. My postings will be somewhat random and will boast my passions - wellness, vegetarianism, friends & family, animals, cooking (but not cooking animals, haha). Read and enjoy.
